Riya Moves For The First Time (Cerebral Palsy)

When Riya’s mother was 7 months pregnant, she was told that baby Riya had a possible heart defect. After her birth, this was confirmed to be pulmonary valve stenosis, a deformity that slows blood flow and at 4 days old, Riya underwent heart catheterization to treat the condition. Riya’s parents were concerned with her development from the very beginning. She received neurological evaluations, which included an MRI. From the MRI she was diagnosed with Agenesis of Corpus Callosum. Around the same time she was also diagnosed with the Mowat-Wilson Syndrome.

Riya’s parents attended the Online Doman Method® Course: From Special Needs to Wellness six months ago, soon after her 5th birthday. At age 5, Riya was essentially immobile and had poor understanding and language. Growing up, Riya was often sick. With each illness and fever she would have febrile seizures. Riya’s prognosis was poor and her progress was slow.

After taking the course, Riya’s parents created a program for her with the help of their staff coach at Doman International. Riya’s program included patterning to learn how to start crawling, time to move on an Inclined Floor, as well as programs for nutrition, sensory stimulation and reading. In the past 6 months, her parents have worked daily on her Doman Method® program. After a few weeks of opportunity to move on the Inclined Floor, Riya began to crawl on her belly down the Inclined Floor. With continued opportunity each day, soon she also started crawling on her belly on the flat floor. This is an important milestone in the mobility pathway for a child to learn to walk. Riya’s family recently took their very first Doman Method® Advanced Consultation evaluation online. At her evaluation, Riya demonstrated that she is able to crawl independently all over the house on her belly easily. She can get to her toys on her own and she moves quickly. She can move across the room on the floor in 30 seconds or less!

Additionally, her health has greatly improved and so has her sleep. In this short time she has gone from understanding only a couple words of speech like responding to her name to understanding hundreds of words in her environment. She can now follow instructions and is very interactive with family members. Parents are extremely pleased that she has made progress in all areas of her life.

We congratulate Riya and her parents for beginning Riya on her pathway to progress and for her success!
